Is SEO Still Worth It in 2026? SEO vs Social Media for Business Growth
The short answer
Yes. SEO is still worth it in 2026, because people still search when they're ready to act ("graphic designer in Nairobi", "CBC school in Oyugis") and AI search tools draw their answers from well-structured websites. Social media is faster for attention, and SEO compounds over time. Most organisations should do both, with social media for reach now and SEO for steady enquiries later.
Questions this article answers
Every few months someone announces that “SEO is dead.” Then I look at the analytics of the sites I manage and see people arriving from Google searches every single day. Here’s my practical take for 2026.
Is SEO still worth the investment in 2026?
Yes, as long as you do it the right way. People still search when they have a need, and searchers are often closer to acting than scrollers:
- “graphic designer in Nairobi”
- “CBC school in Homa Bay County”
- “church conference poster design”
- “website designer Kenya price”
What has changed:
- AI answers. Google and AI assistants now often show a summary before the links. Those summaries are built from websites that clearly answer questions. Well-structured content is how you get mentioned.
- Quality over keywords. Pages stuffed with keywords and written for robots don’t hold up. Pages written by people with real experience, answering real questions, do.
- Local matters more. A complete Google Business Profile, reviews and a location-specific site help you show up for “near me” searches.
What good SEO looks like now
- A fast, mobile-friendly site with clear titles and descriptions on every page.
- Pages that answer real customer questions (like this blog).
- Structured data that tells search engines who you are, where you are and what you offer.
- A Google Business Profile with correct details and genuine reviews.
- Links and mentions from partners, directories and local media.
For a pan-African news site I set up the full SEO foundation from launch: clean page structure, metadata, a sitemap and category pages. That kind of groundwork keeps paying back as the site grows.
Should I focus on SEO or social media for business growth?
Use both, for different jobs:
| Factor | Social media | SEO |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | Fast: a post can reach people today | Slow: results build over months |
| Lifespan | Hours to days per post | Months to years per page |
| Intent | People are browsing | People are searching for a solution |
| Cost over time | Ongoing effort to stay visible | Content keeps working after it’s published |
My recommendation for most small organisations:
- Now: keep social media consistent for visibility and community (see How Often Should You Post?).
- Alongside: make sure your website is fast, mobile-friendly and technically sound, and claim your Google Business Profile.
- Every month: publish one or two genuinely helpful pages or articles that answer your customers’ questions.
If you can only afford one thing this month, choose based on your timeline. For enquiries this week, use social media and WhatsApp. For a steady flow next year, start SEO now.
How does SEO connect to social media marketing?
They feed each other:
- Social sends visitors to your site. More visits, shares and mentions help people discover and link to your pages.
- Your site gives social something to share. Every article can become several posts: a tip, a quote card, a carousel.
- Brand searches grow. When people see you on social media, they Google your name. A strong website catches them.
- Consistent details build trust. The same name, phone number and location on your site, social profiles and Google Business Profile help search engines trust your listing.
The best setup is a loop: post → visit site → read helpful content → enquire → share.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is SEO dead because of AI search?
No. AI search tools summarise information from websites, so clear, well-organised pages that answer real questions are more valuable than ever. What has faded is thin content written only for keywords.
How long does SEO take to work?
Usually months, not days. Local and niche searches can move faster, but plan on three to six months of consistent work before judging results.
Is SEO or social media better for a small business?
Social media gives faster visibility, SEO gives longer-lasting results. Start with social media and a simple, well-optimised website, then add SEO content steadily.
Does social media help SEO?
Indirectly. Social posts don't usually boost rankings on their own, but they bring visitors, mentions and links to your website, and help people find and search for your brand name.
