Do You Need Both a Website and Social Media Management?

The short answer

Most organisations need both, because they do different jobs. Social media gets you noticed and keeps people engaged. Your website is where people check you're credible, find details and take action (enquire, register, book or donate). One person can design both if they have web and social skills, and that keeps your brand consistent.

Questions this article answers

I build websites and run social media, so I’m often asked whether a client really needs both. Usually the answer is yes, because each does a job the other can’t.

Do I need both web design and social media management services?

Think of it like this:

  • Social media is the street. It’s where people discover you, see what you’re up to, and get reminders.
  • Your website is the office. It’s where they come to check you’re real, find details and do something: enquire, register, apply, book or donate.

When I built a school’s website, social media was already bringing parents’ attention. The website gave them somewhere to read about the curriculum, see the school and get in touch. Social posts drove people to the site.

When can you skip one?

  • Skip the website (for now) if you’re very new, sell mainly through WhatsApp, and have almost no budget. But claim your domain and add a simple one-page site as soon as you can.
  • Skip active social media if your customers genuinely don’t use it (rare). Even then, keep profiles with correct contact details, because people will search for you.

Can my website designer also manage my social media strategy?

Sometimes, but don’t assume it. Building a website is a project. Managing social media is a routine. A web designer thinks about structure, speed, search engines and conversions. A social media manager thinks about daily content, timing, trends and replies.

Ask your web designer directly:

  1. Have you managed social media accounts for a client before? Can I see them?
  2. Who will plan the content, write captions and reply to messages?
  3. How will you report results each month?

If they can answer confidently, great. If not, keep them on the website and hire social media support separately.

Can I use the same designer for my website and social media graphics?

Yes, and it’s often the best option, because it keeps your brand consistent:

  • the same colours, fonts and photo style everywhere
  • the same message on the homepage, posters and posts
  • graphics prepared in the right size for each place, from web banners to stories

On the sites in my web portfolio, the website’s look carries straight into social graphics, so a visitor who sees a post and then clicks through feels they’ve arrived at the same place.

How websites and social media work together

  • Link every campaign post to a page, not just your homepage. For example, an admissions post should link to the admissions page.
  • Turn website content into posts. One blog article can become five posts.
  • Use your website for search. People search Google for “graphic designer in Nairobi” or “CBC school in Homa Bay”. Search engines rank web pages, not old Facebook posts (see Is SEO Still Worth It?).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is social media enough without a website?

For very small businesses it can work at first, but you don't own your social media audience, search engines rank websites rather than posts, and many people check for a website before they trust you with money or their children.

Can a web designer manage social media?

Only if they have social media management experience. Building a website is project work. Managing social media is daily, ongoing work with different skills.

Should my website and social media use the same designer?

It helps. The same designer can use one set of colours, fonts, photos and messages across both, so visitors recognise you immediately.
