How Much Should You Budget for Graphic Design and Social Media in Kenya?
The short answer
Budget for design per project (a logo, a poster set, templates) and for social media management per month. The cost depends on how many posts you need, how many platforms, whether captions, replies and reporting are included, and how fast you need revisions. “How much will it cost?” is the first question nearly every client asks me, and the honest answer is: it depends on what you’re actually buying. Two quotes that look very different are often for very different amounts of work.
This guide explains what drives the price, so you can budget sensibly and compare quotes fairly. For my own rates, send me your brief and I’ll reply with a fixed quote.
How much should I budget for graphic design vs social media management?
Think of them as two different kinds of spending:
- Graphic design is mostly project-based. A logo and brand colours, an event poster set, a sermon series pack or notebook covers. You pay once per project.
- Social media management is ongoing. Planning, designing, posting, replying and reporting happen every week, so it’s usually priced monthly.
A sensible order for a small business or ministry:
- One-off brand foundation: logo, colours, fonts and a set of social media templates. This makes every future post faster and cheaper.
- Monthly content: either a designer who produces a fixed number of posts, or a manager who plans and runs everything.
- Campaign extras: budget separately for big moments such as a conference, an admissions drive or a product launch.
If your budget is tight, spend on step 1 first. A good template system lets you or a junior staff member produce decent everyday posts, and you only pay a professional for the important pieces.
What drives the cost?
When you compare quotes, check these:
- Quantity. How many designs or posts?
- Platforms and sizes. One square post or the same design in feed, story, WhatsApp status and print formats?
- Copy. Are you supplying the text, or is the designer writing it?
- Photos. Supplied by you, sourced, or shot?
- Revisions. How many rounds are included?
- Turnaround. Same-day requests cost more than work planned a week ahead.
- Management tasks. Posting, replying to comments and monthly reports are separate work.
What’s included in graphic design packages for small businesses?
A clear package should state:
- Deliverables: for example “1 logo with 3 colour variations” or “12 social media posts”.
- Formats: PNG/JPG for social, PDF for print, and whether you get the editable source files.
- Revisions: usually 2–3 rounds per design.
- Timeline: when the first draft and final files arrive.
- Usage: you should own the final designs for your business use.
For example, a holiday villa project I did was a logo lock-up plus a set of listing and amenity posts in one consistent style, not seven unrelated designs. Packages like that are better value than ordering posts one at a time.
How much content should a designer create for my social media each month?
For most small organisations, 8–20 designed posts a month (two to five a week) is realistic and sustainable. More important than the number:
- Consistency beats volume. Three good posts every week beat fifteen rushed ones in one week and silence the next.
- Plan around your calendar. A church needs Sabbath or Sunday programmes plus event posters. A school needs admissions, events and results. A business needs offers, proof and behind-the-scenes posts.
- Reuse wisely. One event can produce a teaser, a speaker card, a countdown, a “today” post and a thank-you post. Five posts from one design system.

Why does my designer charge extra for social media content?
Because “just a few posts” usually means more than it sounds:
- each design resized for feed, story and WhatsApp status
- captions and hashtags written or fitted
- a series kept visually consistent over weeks
- faster turnaround for timely posts
- sometimes posting and replying too
A single poster is a file. Social media content is an ongoing system. It’s fair for it to be priced differently.
How do social media manager and graphic designer pay compare?
The roles are paid differently because they’re accountable for different things. A designer is paid mainly for craft: the quality and speed of the visuals. A social media manager is paid for ongoing responsibility: strategy, daily presence, community and results. Hybrid roles that do both properly tend to cost more than either alone, but less than two separate hires.
For current salary ranges in Kenya, check recent listings on job boards and LinkedIn for roles of similar seniority. Rates change quickly and differ a lot between Nairobi agencies, NGOs, schools and churches.
How do I measure the return on design and social media spend?
Pick measures that match your goals, and check them monthly:
- Events: registrations and actual attendance
- Schools: admission enquiries and open-day visits
- Churches and ministries: event turnout, livestream views, volunteer sign-ups
- Businesses: DMs, WhatsApp enquiries, bookings and sales mentioning social media
Likes alone are a weak signal. Ask new customers, “How did you hear about us?” It’s free, and it’s the most honest ROI data you’ll get.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is graphic design a one-off cost and social media a monthly cost?
Usually. Brand identity, posters and templates are one-off projects. Social media management is ongoing work, so it is normally charged monthly.
What should a small business graphic design package include?
A clear number of designs, the sizes and formats you'll receive, the number of revision rounds, delivery timelines, and whether source files and print-ready files are included.
How many social media posts should a designer create per month?
For most small organisations, 8 to 20 designed posts a month (two to five a week) is realistic and sustainable. Add extra for events and campaigns.
Why is social media content priced differently from a single design?
Social media content involves resizing for each platform, writing or fitting captions, keeping a series consistent, and usually faster turnaround. It is a recurring system, not a single file.
